RECKONING WITH THE PAST? ON ILLUSORY DE-FASCISATION OF ITALY IN PERIOD TRANSFORMATION (1943-1948) This chapter discusses de-fascisation process in Italy during the systemic transformation 1943-1948. It will examine whether national reconciliation policy pursued by Alcide De Gasperi’s governments second half of 1940s contributed to emergence a societal vision Mussolini’s relatively mild dictatorship, which turn made full reckoning with fascist legacy impossible. More specifically, following issues: 1) illusory Italy’s administrative apparatus, 2) Togliatti amnesty and absence Italian Nuremberg, 3) anti-fascist milieu narratives on fascism as closed history, 4) phenomenon renaissance neo-fascist groups against background explicit legal norms prohibiting practicing any form apology for Mussolini.
